Huntersville is a small town located in the state of North Carolina. It was founded in 1834 by George Washington Haywood and became a center for gunsmithing and shooting. The first guns to be made here were pistols. In 1912, the first rifle magazine was started in Huntersville. Huntersville was founded in 1826 by General James K. Polk, who named it for himself and his brother, William C. Polk. The City of Huntersville became a county seat in 1881, and in 1908, it merged with the City of Chapel Hill to form the current city of Raleigh. The original town site is now within the Durham-Chapel Hill Urban County boundaries. In 1762, Nicholas Gaston built a small fort on the present day University Avenue in what is now downtown Huntersville. In 1785, John Johnston built a more permanent fortification near what is now Fairview Drive and Patton Avenue. Johnston's fort served as an early stronghold of the Cherokee Nation during their efforts to resist European encroachment on their land. The town site was first surveyed by Captains George Tryon and Nathaniel Bacon in 1792 as part of a larger purchase from Sir Walter Raleigh from Creek Indians led by Chief Etowah (Creek: Awatonna). tryon named it "Newbern" after his old home at Newport News Va., while bacon named it "Huntsville" after his friend and mentor Nathanael Greene (1727-1802). In 1851, General James K. Polk moved his headquarters from Philadelphia to Greensboro due to increasing concerns about Indian conflict in North Carolina following the Seminole Wars. When he met with Ulysses S. Grant at New Bern two weeks later, they decided that Greensboro would be their temporary headquarters until they could find permanent quarters elsewhere in North Carolina or Virginia . Later that year, General James K. Polk’s wife Page set up housekeeping arrangements with her son John Fayette Kennett at a cabin owned by Major Richard Stockton on Little River Plantation east of modern day Chapel Hill . That same year also saw another move when Mrs Grant’s stepsister Julia drove one hundred miles north from Nashville to take up residence with her family at Rocky Mount Plantation southeast ofpresent day Raleigh . Mrs Grant eventually relocated her family back to Nashville after some years living out of state.. By this timeependency had been fully dissolved between South Carolina&North Carolina which permittedfor both statestoestablishvicinities& tradeamong themselves without fearofIndian attack
