In 1836, Hunterdon erected a brick courthouse with addition of an opera house and other public buildings In 1861-1865 two Confederate armies invaded southern North Carolina during the American Civil War; Union forces besieged and destroyed most of this city including its courthouse After the war ended Reconstruction began in North Carolina which led to mass African American migration into northcentral NC beginning in earnest in 1875 following passage of The Plessy v Ferguson decision by US Supreme Court In 1925 Huntingdon erected a new high school with additions including an auditorium/theater/ Recreational Hall In 1984-1988 Huntingdon built two schools - One for white students only and One for black students only Firefighters responded to numerous fires over many years while working out at home or overnight shifts while their wives took care of children or cooked dinner

In 1763, the British established a new colony called Carolina Province. Carolina Province was divided into two parts, North and South Carolina, in 1768. North Carolina became an independent state on February 15, 1841.
