The name "Huntersville" originated from the French word "hunteur," meaning hunter or tracker. The city became known for its cotton production, which contributed to its prosperity until the late 20th century. In 1915, General Ulysses S. Grant visited Huntersville during his campaign for president and pronounced it "the most beautiful little town I have ever seen." Huntersville was founded in 1778 by Colonel Cornelius Vance and his wife, Sara. The Vance family were the first white settlers in what is now Huntersville and their land became a part of the Cherokee Nation after they sold it to the United States in 1802. In 1815, General Andrew Jackson tried to burn down the Vance home but was stopped by Col. Vance's son-in-law, James Hogg. The town quickly grew thanks to its location on Catawba River and its rich agriculture and forestry industry. By 1830, Huntingtons had a population of 2,000 people and was a busy center for trade with nearbyayette, South Carolina. However, during the Panic of 1837 that caused widespread economic decline throughout North Carolina, Huntsville lost much of its importance due to rising tuition rates at local colleges and an overall decrease in business opportunities. In 1840, following annexation by Tennessee as part of that state's western boundary dispute with Kentucky, Huntsville merged with neighboring Chattanooga into one city under new management named Chattanooga proper. Afterward, Huntsville experienced rapid development as a manufacturing center for southern Appalachia through World War II until hard times brought about significant declines in population during the 1960s and 1970s. Since then, however, HuntsVILLE has begun to experience resurgence as an important cultural node within the community due to its strong literary tradition (including several Pulitzer Prize winners), vibrant arts scene (including two annual opera festivals), excellent public education system (with more than fifty high school seniors earning college scholarships), and ongoing commitment to downtown redevelopment alongside numerous other community services
