The village of Huntersville was incorporated as a separate city in 1915. On January 1, 1998, Huntersville became a full-time seat of Cumberland County after being voted into existence by its citizens via referendum. As one of only two municipalities without its own police department (the other being Fayetteville), Hunterstown Police Department patrols the community to keep everyone safe and supported while they work on their own projects outside of duty hours*. The next year, they married local women and started a farm on what is now Long Pond Road. In 1827, the Dixon family moved to what is now side street off Market Street and built their house on what is now Elm Street. They were the last to leave Huntersville and their home was destroyed by fire in 1924. The town was founded by Captain John Tryon in 1799 as a small trading post on Roanoke Island. He named it after his home county of North Carolina, Virginia. It became an agricultural community with farming being its mainstay until after World War II when industry took over and the town experienced rapid growth. Today, Huntersville has a population of over 30 thousand residents and continues to be an important cultural center for southeastern North Carolina.
