Huntersville is a small town in North Carolina. It was founded in 1878 by Captain John Hunt and his family. The town has a population of about 2,500 people. Huntersville is the seat of Catawba County. It is part of the Asheville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Huntersville were farmers who came from Virginia and other parts of the British Isles. In 1878, Captains John Hunt and George McDonald bought land near what is now downtown Huntsville and began to build homes. They named their property "Hunter's Point." In 1886, Captains Hunt and McDonald built the first school in Huntersville - a log cabin which they called "The Attic". The school served until 1906 when a new school was constructed on the present site. The post office was established at Hunter's Point in 1892. In 1916, the name of the town changed to "Huntersville" after General Armstrong Custer, who fought at Little Bighorn during the American Civil War. A large fire destroyed most of downtown Huntsville on December 12, 1918; however, due to the quick response from local firefighters, only minor damage occurred. A second large fire destroyed many businesses on November 15th 2003 but again due to quick response by local firefighters this fire did not cause any major damage or loss of life as did earlier fires that consumed much more property than this one
