The present name was given to the community by General James Robertson in 1835 after he surveyed and named it for George Hunter who had served as a captain in the Union Army during the American Civil War. In 1892, John C. Brown established what would become Southern Tobacco Company in downtown Huntersville which became one of the largest tobacco companies in America at that time. In 1907, hunters founded The Huntingdon Rifle Club and Pistol shooting matches were held there until 1922 when they moved to Chapel Hill. Huntersville has been known for its apples since 1784 when Captain Archibald McDonald purchased an apple orchard nearby and named it "McDonald's Orchard". In 1840, General David Catkin donated land to establish Catkin Academy which became one of the most famous private schools in North Carolina with students ranging from high school seniors to professional athletes such as football quarterback Archie Manning and basketball player Julius Erving. In 1923, entrepreneur Myron Easley built his home on parts of Catkin's estate including a Day Care Center and later created Raleigh-based Easley Broadcasting Company from this property which became one of America's leading television broadcasters before selling its assets to Time Warner owns Turner Broadcasting System in 1994.

The first white person to reside in what became Huntersville was James Robertson, who arrived in 1796 as a indentured servant with his father from Scotland. By 1800, Robertson had purchased land here and built a small cabin. He named his community after himself—Huntersville being one of several Scots place names he bestowed on early settlements around this region. By 1812, Robertson's heirs had passed away and control of the town passed to John Pemberton and others associated with the Pemberton Paper Company (founded by John Pemberton). The company built a factory here that produced paper products until it went bankrupt in 1886. In 1892, Huntingdon College opened its doors in downtown Huntsville; it remains an important educational institution today. In 1873, Lillie Redding founded the Ladies Home Journal here as an advertising rag for her new husband's mercantile business interests around Raleigh - today known as Duke Energy Corporation (Duke Energy) - and other businesses she operated out of her home starting in 1874 until her death seven years later at age 90+. In 1903-1904, two major floods hit this area: the Great Falls Flood and Watauga Floods which destroyed over 400 homes and damaged 1,500 more primarily due to flooding caused by heavy rains during winter months when rivers were high enough to cause flash flooding throughout much of North Carolina including Huntersville%. The flooding also left Fish Creek Dam partially submerged as well as extensive damage to crops near Chapel Hill which made up about one-third of Rowan County's agricultural production that year but fortunately no human fatalities resulted from either event although both floods inflicted serious economic losses on the colony/town situated some 10 miles southeast of Raleigh along then newly created Watauga Lakefront National Wildlife Refuge on what is now rated historically significant floodplain located adjacent to Watauga Lake National Military Park managed by U.S.. Army Corps Of Engineers under contract with Georgia Tech University through Research project #HTN-2005-1L-004
Huntersville was founded in 1776 by Captain James Robertson and his men during the American Revolution. The town became a center of trade and culture, with a library, theater, and school being built. In 1868, the town was incorporated as an independent city. During World War II, Huntersville served as the main supply depot for Guadalcanal Station.
