He failed to find any suitable country for farming and returned home soon after; however, his exploration led him eventuallyto become one of the most successful slave traders in American history In 1827–8 Robert Elam established another small frontier outpost at Fort Nashborough on Big Creek about six miles (10 km) northeast of present-day Huntersville; this post served as an early warning system for settlers around Roanoke Rapids onthe Yadkin River about possible Indian attacks. Fort Nashborough was abandoned during Reconstruction because there was not enough money available to keep it operational; however, some remains are still visible today near mile marker 9 on Old Route 441 east of town center.
