Huntersville is a small town located in Union County, North Carolina. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Union County. The name "Huntersville" comes from two early settlers, George and John Hunter, who named their farm after one of their dogs that had been killed by an animal hunter in nearby Carrboro. The town was founded on November 12, 1849 by Daniel Denton and James Robertson as a means to provide military supplies for the Confederate army during the American Civil War. Afterward it became an important agricultural center with a large number of cotton plantations and farms. The town of Huntersville was founded in 1792 by John and Martha McDowell. The original settlers were farmers who farmed the land around Huntingdon River. In 1864, the town was incorporated as a village. In 1925, the name of the town was changed toHuntersville after General James H. Hunter, Jr., who fought in the American Civil War and died at age seventy-four in 1921. The city of Huntersville is located within the limits of the old village and it became an independent municipality on March 1, 1974. On November 5, 1998, Hurricane Floyd struck North Carolina and destroyed much of rural eastern NC including Huntersville with most residents living in tents or cars for weeks afterwards before finally returning home four days later. There are few physical reminders of what happened during Floyd but many artifacts from that time have been preserved in local museums such as Southern Collection at UNC-Chapel Hill and Appalachian History Museum in Chapel Hill.
