Hope Mills is a town located in the Albemarle County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,889 at the 2010 census. Hope Mills is one of two towns in Albemarle County that were founded by Scots-Irish immigrants. The other town is Mount Airy. The first settlers to the area were Nicholas and Catherine MacDonald from Fife, Scotland who arrived in 1772. They built a log cabin on what is now Main Street in Hope Mills. In 1812, James Weir moving from Virginia also settled in this area and began growing corn and raising hogs. In 1840, John Bogue purchased land east of Main Street and started to grow cotton. He named his farm Hope Mill because of his hope for good crop results. When he died in 1867, his wife inherited the mill which continued to be run by her husband's family until it became part of the Duke Power Company in 1901. In 1865, Amos Kendall bought some land near the mill and started to raise tobacco products which he marketed through local stores. When he died in 1935, his son Orson Kendall took over operations of the mills along with several others within Albemarle County including Easley (1927) and Rocky Mount (1928). After World War II there was an increase in manufacturing as more people moved into rural areas looking for opportunities for work outside city limits during this time period called "The Great Migration." In 1957-1960 Floyd Rankin served as Mayor of Hope Mills while working at Duke Power Company where he helped create not only Downtown but also many roads and sidewalks downtown as well as numerous new businesses such as The Grapeseed Bakery (now known as Bick’s), The Woolen Millinery Shop (now known as Olde Peachtree), First Baptist Church (now known as First Presbyterian), JB Hiatt Chevrolet dealership and much more! During Rankin's tenure; construction began on Interstate 95 which cut off most access to rural areas within Albemarle County making farming less profitable so Rankin worked closely with county commissioners Bob Moffett & Donnie Duncan who successfully lobbied for funding for I-95 when it was constructed later that decade Rankin retired from Duke Power Company effective February 15th, 1984 after 41 years thereof service leaving behind an unfinished project - Lake Norman Parkway - that still needs Hobbit-like attention four decades later!
