As a young girl, I never thought I would see the day when scopes were common in my hometown of Hope Mills, North Carolina. In 1915, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service moved from Asheville to Hope Mills as their new headquarters. During World War II, the local paper mill closed but it reopened in 1948 as a research center for telescopes and other optical equipment by Dr. Austin Healey of Dartmouth College. Hope Mills also played an important role in the development of telescopic photography and video recording technology. The first successful commercial videotape recorder was developed at the facility in 1969 by Tandy Corporation under contract with NASA Ames Research Center. Today, Hope Mills is home to several notable museums including the Armstrong Museum of Art (founded in 1921), which houses one of America's first large-scale art galleries devoted exclusively to American Optics;North Carolina State University's Department of History and Anthropology;the North Carolina Museum of Science;and North Carolina Telescope Association’s (NCTA) Observatory Annex located on campus across from Memorial Library). It has since grown again through annexation of other townships including Swift Run, Hickory Hill and Rockingham Counties. The current name was chosen to commemorate the hope that Christianity would bring success to many faces during the Depression years of the 1930s and 1940s
