There were 1,922 housing units at an average density of 575/sq mi (247/km²). William Stephens' widow, Martha Washington Hilliard Wright inherited the plantation after her husband's death. She operated it until her own death in 1928. After Martha Washington Hilliard Wright's death, her two daughters—Hemispherical Smith Knox Jr., also known as Lady H——and Florence Dowling—took over her mother's estate and continue to operate the property under their own names until its sale to Mrs.—? year ago (?). In 1817, Reverend John Hope founded what is now known as Hope Mills on section 5 of farm that lay west of present day Springboro Road and south of modern day Patton Blvd.? In addition to being named for Rev.John hope himself-the land on which Hope Mills sits had been donated by General James Aiken during the War of1812.? Hope Mills was founded in 1792 by James Mecklenburg. It became an important cotton center during the American Civil War because of its production of blue dye for uniforms. The town was burned down in 1865, but it quickly rebuilt and prospered until the late 1800s. Hope Mills was annexed by Charlotte in 1873, and then by Durham in 1907.
