The population grew rapidly during World War II as many people fled to the area to work in munitions plants. After the war, business slowed down as more people started families and moved out of town. In addition to its educational institutions, Hope Mills has many cultural attractions including: two theaters (the Orange Peel and Tryon Palace), four art galleries/ museums (including one open daily during performance season), two restaurants/bars/cafés/, three bowling alleys/taquerias/, two golf courses/, five tennis courts/, six playgrounds/, seven wayside shops/, four churches/(or joint denominational chapels)), twelve shopping centers (/town squares/) - more than any other U.S., Canadian or Spanish town - as well as more than seventy-five private residences ().
