In 1953, Hope Mills experienced one of the most devastating tornado outbreaks in its history when an EF5 tornado struck the town killing all but two residents and damaging or destroying over 100 homes. The community's rebuilding began immediately with new construction starting up in 1954 and continued until 1978 when several large projects led by Mayor Clyde Cook destroyed much of downtown including both churches and mills dating back to 1851 Hope Mills has been ranked among America's "most livable" towns for many years based on metrics like crime rates and life expectancy rankings

Hope Mills is a small town located in the rural area of N.C. It was founded in 1814 by Rev. James Mott and his wife, Ann, on a tract of land that they purchased from the Cherokees. The original mill was built on the current site of Hope Mills University and operated until 1864. After Production moved to Wilmington, Delaware in 1868, the mill became an important center for textile manufacture until it closed its doors in 1957. Hope Mills has been reborn as a tourist attraction and educational center since 1985 when it was designated a National Historic Landmark. Hope Mills is named after Reverend James Mott, who served as pastor of First Presbyterian Church in that community from 1784-1814 and who played an important role in helping develop the town's economy and social life. In 1814, Mott immigrated to America with his family and set up shop near what is now Durham County Courthouse Square. He soon realized that he needed more than just a few acres of land to start a new village, so he purchased another 400 acres adjacent to what would become Hope Mills University (now known as UNC). With this purchase, Rev. Mott opened the first school in North Carolina - “The Academy” - which taught students religious worship, moral philosophy, arithmetic, surveying and law during sessions conducted outdoors on long axes over open ground near present day First Baptist Church (the building still stands). The academy quickly became successful enough that Mott decided to build a second school - this time with walls - within his new village limits next door to The Academy. This newly constructed school too proved successful soMott began construction on a third school – this time brick – which opened its doors May 1st,. 1800 at what is now Second Baptist Church (the nave remains today)). By 1830 there were four schools operating within the limits of present day Hope Mills Village; three academies and one brick schoolhouse! In 1824 Rev. James Mott married Ann Powell whom he had met while preaching at First Presbyterian Church several years earlier.. They raised their two children here before moving back east where they started their own church back home… Ann died suddenly 4 years later leaving James with 3 young children already grown – 2 girls & 1 boy! In 1861 Factory Owners rioted against Governor Tryon due t increasing taxes associated w increased transportation costs associated w Civil War… factory owners appealed tha decision t various courts resultingin reopened factories…. Hope Mills was founded in 1818 by John Hicks and his wife Anna. The first store opened in the area now known as downtown Hope Mills. In 1825, the town of Hope Mills was platted and became a part of Union County. In 1851, the town annexation happened and it became part of Greensboro County. On July 1, 1896, Hope Mills incorporated as a municipality with a population of 10,000 people and remains one of the most populous municipalities within Greensboro County to this day.
