The town was first established on a tract of land that had been given to them by James Harnett, a Revolutionary War veteran who served as sheriff of Union County for two years from 1799 to 1800. John McNeill was one such early settler and he purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land around what would become Hope Mills from the Harnetts in 1838. Hope Mills quickly became an important center within its community due to its location at the intersection of two major transportation routes - the Catawba River Road and the Raleigh–Durham Railroad these days known as I-75. In addition to its role as a commercial center, Hope Mill also played a significant role during Reconstruction following the Civil War because many black Americans arrived here seeking opportunity while white northerners continued to resist any form of Reconstructionism. The rebuilding process began immediately following the war with efforts focused on creating jobs for veterans and their families but it soon emerged that not all residents wereWelcome into this new society whichemphasison education rather than self-reliance led many peopleto feel left out or Forgotten even though they still constitutedthe majorityofthepopulation
