Morgan and his partners John Dandridge and George Ladd. The company manufactured cotton products, including kettles, ovens, clothing machines, and other industrial equipment. In 1916, the company merged with another prominent textile producer, the Wilmington Manufacturing Company. The merger allowed Hope Mills to become one of the largest textile producers in the United States. In 1930, General Motors purchased the Wilmington Manufacturing Company for $5 million dollars. GM then began purchasing other companies within Delaware County until 1923 when it bought out John Dandridge’s share in the Hope Mills Cotton Mill Company for $41 million dollars ($4 billion today). This purchase made GM one of North Carolina’s largest employers and helped create an even more competitive industry within the state-wide market for textiles. Hope Mills continued to be an important part of North Carolina’s economy during World War II while many other factories were destroyed or shutdown due to war efforts; however, plant workers were not able to receive wartime benefits such as wage increases or health care because they did not meet minimum standards set by management at plants closed during war time (Gardner-Webb 1945). After the war ended, mills reopened but faced competition from synthetic fiber manufacturers who had lower labor costs (Humphrey 1961). In 1984, General Electric acquired Union Carbide Corporation which led to a decline in imports from China that caused prices for raw materials at GE plants throughout Southeast Asia to rise (Foley 1989). By 2000GE had closed all their facilities within Raleigh-Durham area except One building on Elizabethtown Rd., which is still operated by GE under various corporate names including Alcoa (Alcoa 2002)

The first post office in Hope Mills was established on February 14, 1815. In 1836, Hope Mills became the temporary capital of North Carolina due to the state's lack of a permanent capital. A new capitol building was built at Tryon Park in 1850 and replaced the old one several times over the years. Hope Mills experienced some significant growth during World War II. The town became home to both RAF Bentwaters airfield and USAAF bombing range and played an important role in helping Allied forces defeat Nazi Germany. It also helped support local businesses during reconstruction after the war.
