In the town of Hope Mills, North Carolina, there are several gun targets that date back to before the Revolutionary War. One of these targets is a cannonball shot from a British Royal Navy ship off of Cape Hatteras in 1775. The target is still standing and can be seen today at the Coastal Heritage Museum. In 1867, Morehead State College (MCS) opened its doors on land donated by Jno. Hancey and others from Shockoe Creek Township. In 1913, MCS became North Carolina's first university with a campus located on what is now Main Street between Ninety-Third Street and Fourth Street within the original town boundaries limits. In 1916 when UNC Chapel Hill moved to its new location on University Boulevard just north of downtown Raleigh, MCS followed suit and completed construction of its own brick building on Main Street within the old town limits; this building still stands today as Morehead State University's main academic facility. Hope Mills has long been known for its Baptist religion with churches including Hickory Hill Baptist Church being founded in 1865 as one of several groups that unified around this denomination after disagreements about Methodism's role among African Americans living east of Wilmington Road/Stroudsburg AvenueCoretta Scott King Drive). Hope Mills also contains more than 20 convenience stores which are all independently owned and operated which makes it one of the most unique places to live outside larger cities or coastal towns throughout southeastern Pennsylvania etc.).
Hope Mills was founded in 1775 by a group of Presbyterian ministers and farmers. The community grew rapidly and soon had a school, churches, and a mill. In 1825, the town became the seat of trustees for the University of North Carolina. Hope Mills remained an important center for education until the 1920s. Today, Hope Mills is a small town with few remaining buildings from its original days.
