Hope Mills is a town in Robeson County, North Carolina. The population was 5,608 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hope Mills is bordered by Huntersville to the north, Apex to the east, and Statesville to the south. The town was founded in 1827 as a small community on a tract of land that had been granted to Elijah Hicks by Sir Walter Raleigh for his investment in trade with India. Hicks's family ran Hope Mills until it merged with nearby Cary in 1959. The two towns are still considered separate municipalities, though they share some common facilities and residents. Hope Mills is located on State Highway 152 about 12 miles (19 km) northeast of downtown Raleigh and 8 miles (13 km) east of Interstate 95. The town has a total area of , making it one of the smallest cities in North Carolina by size. Hope Mills was originally called "Mount Carmel". In 1827, Elijah Hicks donated land for the community which he named after his mother's birthplace – Mount Carmel near Jerusalem – because he believed that this place would be an ideal location for religious services andcommerce operations due to its accessibility from both Raleigh and Durham." Hope Mills became operational as a small village on October 17, 1827 when 25 homes were built including 10 Agricultural buildings." By 1830-31 there were over 100 people living here!" In 1836-37 3 stores & 1 warehouse opened" In 1860-61 2 churches were built"& 4 schools opened: one day school for boys & 1 girls school"There also was an academy building erected which served as both library and high school from 1861-1865"By 1865 all but one school had closed & only 1 girl’s high school remained open"(the now defunct Alamance County Female High School) “During these years more than $42500 worth of goods were imported into this country from England through Cary!” With only 7% unemployment rates during Reconstruction era there must have been plenty of business opportunities available! Unfortunately by 1870 most businesses had either closed or become automated." In 1957 when Cary merged with Hope Mills all businesses within the original town boundaries ceased operation while those within neighboring Apex continuedOperating however many hours later than their counterparts within Concord/Apex which caused some animosity between these 2 communities until finally resolutions were passed promising that no business shall operate late at night without prior written consent from both Communities!" Hope Mills was founded in 1792 by Eleazer Dickinson and his wife, Catharine. The town became a center of evangelical Christianity after it was founded on the banks of the Catawba River. Hope Mills rapidly grew due to its location, and theDickinsons built a large church, a school, and other buildings in the early nineteenth century. In 1847, John Cockerill purchased land adjacent to Hope Mills from the Dickinson family for $10,000. This purchase created what is now known as Cockerill Park. Hope Mills experienced some dramatic changes during the American Civil War. The town was one of several located between North Carolina's eastern border and Confederate forces at Fort Fisher. On July 12, 1861, Confederate forces attacked Hope Mills with cannons and rifle fire from atop Fort Fisher. A few days later Union troops arrived to help protect the town from Confederate attack. The fight at Hope Mills remains one of America's most dramatic Civil War stories. The end of Reconstruction saw significant changes in Hope Mills as well. From 1865 until 1870 white residents started moving out of town while African Americans continued to be concentrated in Rosalind Island area around downtown). In 1871 white residents voted to re-establish themselves as an independent municipality under the name "Hope." In 1984 voters passed a resolution reaffirming that all citizens are welcome within their municipal boundaries regardless of race or ethnicity (though this policy has not been fully enforced). Hope Mills is today one of North Carolina's largest cities with over 50,000 residents and many businesses across many sectors including education, technology and health care. It is also home to sizable concentrations of evangelical Christians – making it one of the most diverse cities in North Carolina –and black people who have maintained strong community ties throughout its history despite facing discrimination throughout much of America during that time period..
