By 1915, construction had begun on what would become known as "The State Capitol" and final approval for its construction came from President Woodrow Wilson in 1916 just before he left office. The building opened on July 1st, 1917 and served as both North Carolina's state capital until Raleigh took over in 1967 and again from 2001-2007 when Durham replaced it due to concerns about city growth adjacent to The State Capitol buildings footprint Hope Mills also saw significant development during World War II with many residents helping contribute their time or money towards military service either directly or indirectly through various organizations such as American Legion Post #522 or local Red Cross chapters In recent years much focus has been placed upon downtown redevelopment including an effort to bring an NHL hockey team (the Charlotte Checkers) to town while also plans are underway for retail development surrounding Interstate 295 as well as new housing developments nearby . Overall it seems that hope mills will continue grow steadily into into future decades thanks largely to its rich history and proximity to some of Northern Virginia's most vibrant cities
