Hope Mills is a town in Granville County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,402 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. The first Hope Mills settlement was established in 1814 when Henry Hope and his family moved from Scotland to what is now Hope Mills after purchasing land in the area. In 1836, John A. Thornton founded a flourmill in what is now Hope Mills Township. By 1840, all of Granville County had been organized into townships and Hopkinton became the first township president. In 1851, Hopkinton's mill closed due to competition from a new mill established by Colonel Johnnie Johnston near Gastonboro. In 1861, Johnston's mill burned down; this event led to the founding of the National Volunteer Committee for Reconstruction which helped promote black entrepreneurship and industrial development in post- reconstruction America. In 1865, General Johnston ordered General Nathan Bedford Forrest to march on Morganton with orders to incite racial violence against freedmen there; Forrest instead marched on Greensboro where he met resistance from white civilians before reaching Morganton. This event set off a series of skirmishes that lasted weeks and resulted in many deaths among both sides while also stirring up much public sentiment against Forrest's activities across America. In 1868, one year after General Johnston's death at Appomattox Court House during the American Civil War, Governor Tryon approved plans for an agricultural college at nearby Chapel Hill which would become UNC Charlotte (later Duke University). The college opened its doors on December 15th 1870 as Elon College with Reverend James Meeks as its first president and Drs Julius Nylander and Archibald Murray as their trustees/directors-in-chief [1]. The original campus contained 126 acres (49 ha) including present day Hope Mills Boulevard within what is now known as "Eden Park". As enrollment growth continued unabated at UNC Charlotte – reaching 2,500 students by 1908 – faculty began seeking expanded facilities adjacent to Eden Park which were eventually built upon including today’s main campus building located south of Interstate 85 just east of downtown Chapel Hill [2]. With rapid growth came demands for even more space so that UNC Charlotte could offer coursesmudrly taught by graduate assistants rather than full professors and finally Superintendent Drury granted approval for construction of a large student union building on Main Street overlooking downtownCharlotte just prior to World War II [3] . Today’s main campus buildings stand proud atop a hill overlooking downtown Chapel Hill following years of comprehensive renovation/updates including addition or replacement of dozens of classrooms/facilities plus extensive landscaping program resulting in numerous parkland developments containing high school sports fields as well as residences situated immediately adjacent including two prestigious private schools: Episcopal School for Girls (founded 1946) located adjacentto NC State University[4]and primary care physician Mehmet Ozdemir Schoolschool(founded 1954)[5],one currently hometo over 2500 students enrolledpermanent or summer divided between several campuses comprising multiple colleges & universitieswith additional satellite locations scattered throughout eastern North Carolina
