Despite their modest beginnings, Hope Mills has gone through many transformations over time: from an agricultural community to a major cultural center for McDowell County during both pre-Civil War and post-Civil War times; from a small village to an important regional city during the late 19th century; and finally from a small rural place to an important bedroom community throughout much of 20th century America. Today continuing efforts are being made to revive interest in Hope Mills as both an historical site and tourist destination – with special attention paid to its civic culture which has helped make the town one of McDowell County's major economic engines.

However, during the late 2000s recession, Hope Mills experienced decline and some residents left for more rural areas in search of job opportunities.
