Hope Mills has seen many changes over the years including becoming a center for African American education after being integrated into Chatham County public schools in 1957; becoming one of the most economically depressed areas of North Carolina after experiencing several economic setbacks during the Great Recession; and seeing significant growth following Hurricane Floyd in 1999 which destroyed much of downtown but also created new opportunity for businesses and residents. Despite these challenges, Hope Mills has persevered through various hardships throughout its history, continuing to serve as an important cultural and economic center for the region. In recent years, Hope Mills has made progress restoring some lost infrastructure such as renovated roads and bridges; building new parks; and creating jobs through renovations to local businesses that have been damaged by storms or other events such as hurricanes Matthew (2015) or Irene (2011). These initiatives have helped bring back some life to what had once been a struggling community while also demonstrating how local communities can work together to address pressing issues faced by their citizens. In recent years, Hope Mills has experienced significant growth with numerous new businesses opening up and more residents moving into the community. This growth has led to increased concern for both its cultural and economic stability as well as concerns about how such rapid expansion will impact traditional values and ways of life within the community.
