Hope Mills is a town in the U.S. state of North Carolina, founded in 1836 by Willis and Eliza Mills. The population was 21,641 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem metropolitan area. Hope Mills is located on Catawba River near its confluence with Yadkin Rivers forms the Pee Dee River watershed. The first permanent settler in what became Hope Mills was Willis Mills, who arrived in 1836 from Georgia with his family and three slaves. The name "Hope" came from an old Cherokee word meaning "a place where there is plenty of food." In 1840, Willis and his wife Eliza established a small grocery store in what is now downtown Hope Mills to serve their community's needs for goods such as flour, meat, butter, eggs, cheese and tea. By 1850, they had acquired additional land south of present day Main Street and built a large brick building that still stands today known as the millinery shop (now called the industrial museum). In 1861, when North Carolina seceded from United States during the Civil War (and lost many of its slave states), mills closed because of Union military occupation; however, they reopened after hostilities ended two years later under new management including Willis' son John Nolen who served as president pro tem of both houses of North Carolina's General Assembly before dying in 1865 after being elected governor in 1868. In 1886 Congress passed The Tariff Act which increased duties on export items imported into the United States from Europe; this caused a decline in local manufacturing activity which was compounded by economic recession following World War I; however production resumed by 1922 when tariffs were lowered again following President Warren Harding's New Deal policies . In 2002 (the centennial year of Hope Mills) Enterprise Companies announced it would shutter its doors effective September 1st due to low sales levels resulting from Hurricanes Andrew and Irene However operations continued through October 31st using temporary quarters within another company’s facility until November 14th when all employees were laid off including most women who worked at Enterprise companies beginning back prior to Hurricane Irene A private group led by Mayor Donnie Hargrave purchased property along Interstate 85 just east of downtown Hope Mills on November 15th 2006 making full use of an empty lot next to State Farm Arena until January 1st 2007 when all tenants were forced out due to safety issues associated with high winds/poor living conditions inside stadium causing extensive damage done to business fronts as well as interior walls leaving large gaping holes throughout facility
