Holly Springs is part of the Asheville-Buncombe County Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is bordered to the south by Interstate 25 and to the north by Cherokee National Forest. The town's ZIP code is 27523. Holly Springs was founded in 1868 as a farming community on high ground east of Asheville. In 1907, it became an incorporated village and began to grow rapidly as a bedroom community for Asheville. By 1960, Holly Springs had become one of the most important towns in Buncombe County and its ZIP code had been increased to 27602. In 2000, however, Buncombe County discontinued all annexations and instead created Hollysboro Township which annexed much of what remains of Holly Springs. The history of Holly Springs can be traced back to 1868 when James Witherspoon settled on land that would later become known as Holly Springs after his daughter's birthplace in Scotland (now called Oban). Witherspoon named his new community after his daughter who he claimed was born there on December 5, 1786 (the day before Christmas). At first, only men were allowed to settle in Holly Spring; later women were also allowed but they did not gain full citizenship until 1924 when their right to vote was granted under the Fourteenth Amendment To the United States Constitution. In 1907, due to increasing population growth and development within nearby Asheville, Horry Sims donated land off Highway 126 near present-day downtown Holly Springs for use as a suburb or commuter town for people living within easy walking distance of both cities while still enjoying access to education and jobs opportunities that existed within either city limits. This area now known as Downtown Hollysboro became home to some businesses including Mailman’s Grocery Store which opened its doors in 1906 along with four tire stores operated by Goudy Tire & Rubber Company before becoming JBS Hardware Incorporated in 1962 followed by several other businesses until finally being consumed by residential development over time culminating with Wright Broadcasting Corporation’s establishment operations from 1967 through 1978 anchored by Phillips 66 Plaza across from Walmart Supercenter until it closed down completely following Hurricane Floyd in 1999 leaving many business owners without any local employment or recourse during those difficult times especially given Scarbrough’s decision not open up store hours following her husband Bob Smith’s death from cancer just two weeks prior which left many customers stranded without items they needed during those tough times Sears actually vacated their entire store center opening up shop online rather than wait out Hurricane Floyd largely because they could no longer find employees available during that timeframe walmart sources indicate that this closure likely saved many lives because most companies running out of space or unable find adequate replacements likely would have folded JAKE'S BARS INC., once again operating under another name prior TO THE STORM passed through early 2001 continuing thru early 2009 having relocated across I-85 South exit NOW OPENING UP ON PENNSYLVANIA AVE IN CENTER OF HOLLYSBORO WITH NEW NAME "JACK'S BAR"

Holly Springs was founded in 1836 by Captain John Biittner and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after the Holly tree which grows in the town square. The first settler were two men, Nicholas and Jacob Sprague. In 1840, a post office was established in Holly Springs with Mrs. Sprague as the first Postmaster. The town grew rapidly and by 1851 there were over 100 residents living in Holly Springs. By 1865, the population had increased to 1,500 people and it continued to grow until it reached its peak in 1880 with 2,000 residents. However, during the early 1900s an urban sprawl began to take place and by 1920 there were only 350 residents remaining inside of Holly Springs limits. This decline can be attributed to several factors including economic recession during this time period as well as competition from nearby towns such as Cleveland (now Greensboro) for jobs and residential development outside of Holly Springs

By 1900, there were over 100 homes in Holly Springs and it had a population of around 350 people. However, during World War II, many residents deserted the town because they felt that it would be targets of Allied bombings.
