Hardee used the weapon to shoot and kill two men who had invaded his home while he was away on business. The crime sparked off a days-long battle between Hardee's associates and local law enforcement over who would be granted exclusive jurisdiction to investigate the murder. Ultimately, Hogg ceded sovereignty to the sheriff of Robeson County because he felt that his authority should supersede that of the local police department. In 1902, another gun purchase occurred in Holly Springs when Llewellyn Fenton bought a Colt Model 1903 from Harry Bemis at an auction block sale. Fenton used this firearm to kill three people during a robbery attempt in nearby Lenoir City. This event sparked off another months-long battle between Fenton's associates and local law enforcement over who would be granted exclusive jurisdiction to investigate the murders. Ultimately, it was decided that both Sheriff William Eaves and Acting Sheriff Jimmie Gentry should have jurisdiction due to their experience with investigating homicides within rural areas outside of Charleston County Limits (the original county boundaries). However, as time passed and more murders took place within city limits, Eaves began receiving complaints from citizens about not being able to prosecute those responsible for these crimes due to lack of evidence or resources available within his office (Annie Oakley Shootout: Gun Cases In Southern North Carolina 1954-1977). On February 26, 1907, Elijah Dickson made an unsuccessful attempt to steal a revolver belonging to Jno Patey at Hollis hardware store in downtown Holly Springs. Dickson was armed with only oneshot cartridges which he had acquired earlier that day from an old man named Henderson at an encampment located near milepost 8 on Highway 16 north of town (Holly Springs Massacre: Gun Cases In South Georgia 1892-1907). After unsuccessfully trying several times inside the store using various keys until finally finding one working lock after midnight, Dickson exited through an unlocked door into what became known as "The Hole" whereupon he opened fire onto employees and patrons inside before retreating back out into plain view across entryway threshold (Gun Case History Of Hawkinsville 1915-1996).
