Holly Springs, North Carolina is a town in Buncombe County, North Carolina. The population was 1,633 at the 2010 census. Holly Springs is located on the wrong side of the state line from Asheville, and it lies about 25 miles (40 km) south of Raleigh. It is one of the most isolated towns in North Carolina. The first settlement in what is now Holly Springs was made by white settlers in 1811. A Methodist Episcopal church was built there in 1815. In 1828, a post office called "Holly Springs" was established with three employees and a letterpress press. The name "Holly Springs" originated from John Holly's observation that he could see no signs of life anywhere near his cabin on Spring creek until he looked over to where Holly Falls cascaded down a stream into the Indian River below. In 1863, Confederate General Jubal Early transferred his army from Fort Fisher to Elizabeth City while they were besieging Wilmington, Delaware; when Early reached Elizabeth City he ordered his forces to march northward through Holly Springs towards Durham County for deployment against Union General Ulysses S. Grant's main army at Kinston headquarters near Hillsborough Abbey (now part of Raleigh). By nightfall on September 12th 1863 approximately 10% of Early's force had arrived at Elizabeth City under cover of darkness; however, almost all troops except for some skirmishers entered Durham County without battle before early morning surprise attacks by Union forces destroyed most or all Confederate stores and artillery positions east of Rocky Mount Road (). The Battle of Elizabeth City occurred during early morning October 8th 1863 as Union forces advanced northeast along Rocky Mount Road towards Durham County via Surboro Road (). On October 8th 1863 nearly 200 men died as Confederate cavalry charges routed an enemy force numbering only 100 men commanded by Colonel James Hentz who retreated toward Rocky Mount road across Surboro Creek Bridge which resulted in several deaths among Confederates trying to cross). For this engagement Hentz received credit for singlehandedly leading his brigade into action despite being outnumbered four-to-one (). In 1865, Confederate General Pee Wee Crayton moved his base camp within striking distance of Raleigh after taking possession of Goldsboro Railroad Station; upon learning that Ulysses S Grant intended to send Major General William Tecumseh Sherman's Army northwestward through eastern NC CSA under orders from President Abraham Lincoln Crayton withdrew his remaining Cavalry forces westward down Sweetwater Creek where they blockaded roads necessary for Sherman's march northeastward across central NC during November and December 1865 resulting in heavy casualties for both sides including more than two hundred killed and wounded between November 6th and December 15th 1865 making it one of the largest engagements fought during the American Civil War overall with over 50% casualty rate for Confederate units including more than 60%+ Casualties among Federal troops
Holly Springs was founded by the Holly family in 1853. The community grew rapidly and soon there were schools, churches and businesses. In 1916, the Holly Springs School District was formed and continues to operate today.
