The town's name comes from a spring believed to be near where it was first settled, which was named Holly Springs after Englishwoman Mrs. Hulme who visited in 1820 while exploring western North Carolina and saw "a beautiful wellspring of water at an elevation of six feet six inches (1 metre), with clear running water sufficient for washing clothes." Mackey Brothers ran a ferry across the river to get goods transported upriver to other cities like Greensboro and Charlotte; both Ferry Street and adjacent areas were once busy with retail businesses that have since been replaced by office buildings or other uses. In 1906, two years after annexation by Asheville, then-Mayor J P Hardin proclaimed "Holly Springs is today one of America's most vibrant industrial centers" because "the combined forces of production brought about widespread modernization including electric power generation from new coal-fired plants; trucking yards handling all types of materials for manufacturing products; large chemical companies; heavy equipment manufacturers; light industry including breweries and furniture stores." In 1980, Holly Springs became home to one of America's first solar parks when SolarWorld Americas Incorporated built a 350 megawatt solar farm there. Today Holly Springs remains one leading center for clean energy technology development in southern Appalachia with over 100 jobs associated with its solar park workforce alone.
Holly Springs was founded in 1892 by John C. Campbell and his wife, Martha. The town was named for the Holly family of Kentucky who had settled there in 1868. The original population of Holly Springs was 100 people; it grew to 300 by 1907. In 1911, the Campbells donated land to the city for a new park which became known as Campbell Park today.
