Holly Springs is a small town located in central North Carolina. It was founded in 1849 by Scots-Irish settlers, and today it has a population of around 25,000 people. The town is noted for its antique shops, boutiques, and galleries, as well as its famous Holly Springs Festival which takes place annually in mid-July. The townsite was named after the Holly tree found near the settlement. The first settler to arrive in what is now Holly Springs was John Blair who arrived on horseback in 1849. He named the community after his home country Scotland – hence the name of the street where he lived until his death in 1863. Other early residents included David Laird and James McCullough who both came to Holly Springs from Scotland between 1851 and 1853. During Reconstruction (1865-1877), many African Americans moved to Holly Springs from areas such as Jacksonboro and Louisville because they were fearful of being arrested or violence visited on them there following the end of slavery. This period saw some heavy racial tension within Holly Springs between black locals and white newcomers; however, little crime actually occurred here during this time frame. In 1865, General William Tecumseh Sherman ordered all Confederate troops west of the Mississippi River destroyed; this order led to much havoc throughout Central Carolina due to lack of food supplies for soldiers and their families back east – an event known as “The Death March” which caused widespread starvation among civilians living along that route at that time. However, despite this difficult situation, many black farmers managed to survive by raising corn on their properties while also working odd jobs elsewhere in town or outside of it altogether. Finally conquering North Carolina statehood in 1907,[1] South Carolina Governor Isaac Peebles called upon North Carolinians everywhere to join him celebrating this momentous occasion[2] – one which eventually resulted in increased numbers moving into Holly Spring over time.[3] By 1915 there had been more than 20 Irish immigrants living here since its founding[4], making it one of Appalachia’s most diverse communities at that point. Today, with so many people living here permanently or longer term,[5], cultural events like the Holly Springs Festival remain a major draw for tourists/ Residents alike!
