Founded in 1785, Holly Springs was the first African American settlement in North Carolina. The community grew rapidly due to its location near then-new frontier land and its rich natural resources. By 1815, Holly Springs had a population of over 100 black residents. However, during the American Civil War, many of the town's black residents sided with the Union side. As a result, Holly Springs fell victim to Confederate forces' shelling and destruction throughout 1865-1866. Today, only a few remnant pieces of Holston remain from what once was an thriving community.
