It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg–Wilmington, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. High Point is located on the banks of the Yadkin River and has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cfa), abbreviated as "Cfa". The area around High Point was originally called Albemarle by early English colonists and then Edgecombe by planters in the late 18th century. In 1868, Vance County was formed from parts of Cumberland and Union Counties. The town of High Point was founded in 1903 by farmers who were seeking to escape high taxes levied on agriculture in neighboring counties. High Point began to grow rapidly after World War II when many businesses were brought in by soldiers returning home or businesses opened up due to military defense spending during that time period. The population reached its peak with 11,000 people in 1960 but declined steadily over the next few decades as more jobs moved away or were lost in industry changes such as automation and overseas outsourcing. The current population stood at 10,811 as of the 2010 census. A large number of High Point residents commute to work in nearby Charlotte or Raleigh each day; this commuting pattern has helped keep HighPoint's economy strong despite lingering challenges posed by recent global economic downturns which have had a negative impact on other parts of Vance County

Over time, other religious groups established themselves in High Point as well: Congregationalists (1793), Methodists (1827), Presbyterians (1837), Methodist Episcopalians (1901), Episcopalians (1965). High Point quickly became an important center for agriculture because it had access to good soil and ample waterways. Agricultural production continued to be an important part of Lowndes County's economy through the late 19th century; however, textiles also emerged as a major industry in HighPoint during this time period. By 1900, textile mills had replaced agricultural production as Lowndes County's primary source of income. During World War II, many plants were located within or close to HighPoint; these plants produced materials for both military purposes and civilian use throughout Southeast Asia. After war ended, many factories closed down due to economic competition from abroad but some remain active today including GASCO Power Plant which provides power for hospitals and municipalities in Durham and Wakefield counties
The Battle of High Point was fought on July 12, 1814, between the United States army and Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The battle resulted in a Union victory and ended Confederate control over much of eastern North Carolina.
