High Point is a town in Gates County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill Combined Statistical Area. At one time High Point was the seat of government for Gates County and its predecessors Chatham, Orangeburg and Person counties. The present county courthouse building was built in 1847 and served as the county seat until High Point became an incorporated city in 1909. The first people to live in what is now High Point were two families who came from Scotland overland during the 17th century. They named their new community "Newtown", after their home town of Newtown in England. The Scottish settlers founded a farmstead on what is now called Main Street which they named "Highpoint". Prior to incorporation as a city, High Point was known as "Gatesville" because it had been selected by James Gentry as his Cherokee Nation hunting ground where he would conduct his annual “Gates River” hunt with his Indian allies on July 4th each year since 1776 (the date when Virginia claimed all or most of North Carolina). In 1809, Gatesville was renamed "High Point" after General John Covington's victory at Battle of Horseshoe Bend against Creek Indians near that location some 25 years earlier. In fact, much of what we know about High Point today comes from stories told by early settlers about their experiences here during those pioneer days... The City Council appointed George Suggs as Mayor on April 5th, 1909 following the resignation of Elisha Dickson who had become President pro tem for the State Senate due to health reasons; Suggs had been mayor for six years prior to that date and helped develop HighPoint into an efficient municipal government under his leadership. On December 3rd 1910, voters approved a resolution recognizing Christmas Eve 1911 as National Night/Christmas Day in honor of General John Covington and others who fought so bravely for American independence; this event has been celebrated annually ever since! In 1916 Hurricane Floyd made landfall along Interstate 85 just south of downtown High Point killing nearly 100 people and causing extensive damage including widespread flooding throughout eastern North Carolina; however firefighters quickly responded and led efforts to rebuild virtually everything within hours – something that still stands as one of the most heroic moments in history! On November 26th 1918 World War I veteran Major Alpheus Chandler died while serving with Company K1 2nd Battalion 124th Infantry Regiment Headquarters Battalion (later reorganized Company A) 8 Mile Road Post Mortem Report stated: He fell from atop machine gun position onto open ground below under enemy fire resulting fatally from exposure...he then went back up [to take cover] but soon afterward fell again mortally hit by friendly fire…At approximately 0330 Hours on November 26TH 1918 he expired from injuries received while engaging hostile forces..

High Point, North Carolina is a city in the state of North Carolina and the seat of Buncombe County. The population was 41,594 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Blue Ridge Mountains, about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Asheville, the state capital. The town's first inhabitants were Native Americans who called it "Gunta" meaning "place where water flows." In 1819 High Point was founded as a station on then-new U.S. Route 27 by General James Robertson with construction assistance from Andrew Johnson and others associated with his presidential campaign. In 1851 High Point became an incorporated town when word spread that gold had been discovered in Cherokee County to the south of High Point. The discovery led to a rush of people to find new businesses and occupations in what would become one of America's most populous towns during its early years as an industrial center. By 1860 High Point had over 4,000 residents and was home to two newspapers – The Daily Review and The Univeristy Gazette – as well as three banks and five churches. During World War II High Point served as one of several strategic points along I-85 corridor connecting Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and Atlanta through Buncombe County for military purposes such as storage yards for fuel supplies or airfields for bombing raids on Japanese targets in southern China; much remains today still under military jurisdiction including numerous bridges over I-85 that remain open to traffic despite being seismically active due to Mount Mitchell National Park located adjacent to the town center; also still extant are many homes constructed during this time frame especially around Interstate 40/I-285 interchange which remains both busiest arterial route within town limits today while also providing easy access into/out of town via exits 8 (westbound), 9 (eastbound) and 10A (northbound). Today high point is known primarily for its large textile mills which continue operation although there are now limited employment opportunities within mill hands itself resulting in some reducing or eliminating their use altogether; however even these small setbacks have not stopped downtown from continuing flaunting multiple award nominations including “Best Place To Live” designation by Next steps magazine in 2017

After he died in 1802, his widow Reva married Benjamin Fenton and they moved their settlement to where Fenton's plantation now stands.
