High Point is a town in Duplin County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Duplin County. The first settlers in High Point were German immigrants who arrived from what is now Bavaria in 1827. They founded a small trading post on the Pee Dee River and named it "Heidelberg" after their home city in Germany. By 1830, they had built a large sawmill on the river andnamed it "Happenstahls". A member of the state senate from Albemarle County (now Wake) recommended that High Point be established as a county seat because its location made it an important trade center for agricultural products and timber shipped down the Pee Dee River. The vote to establish High Point as county seat was 2-1 with only one abstention due to illness of Senator John Leland; he died three days later at his home in High Point. In 1836, James Kenedy purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of present-day High Point from Nicholas de Chamblee for $4 per acre (0.93 per km²). He named his new development "Kendrell's Colony". Kendrell developed this area into one of North Carolina's most prosperous farming counties during the early 19th century thanks to his exploitation of coal seams found near present-day Durham and Chapel Hill. In 1887, local citizens organized a strike against William Fenton, director of Southern Railway Company; this event is considered to be among High Point's earliest legal protests against business practices by corporate entities such as Southern Railroad Company or Standard Oil Company which would later victimize Lowcountry communities like Wilmington and Raleigh through slum clearance projects known as white flight or "the Great White Migration."
