High Point is a town in Gates County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,539 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Gates County. The town was founded in 1817 and named for General James Highsmith, who had been instrumental in the Battle of Bunker Hill. The first white settlers in High Point were two families from Scotland who built a cabin on the hill that now houses the Yates store. In 1824, John Anderson founded what would become one of High Point's most important businesses - Anderson's grocery store. The store was located on Main Street between Capitol and Pettit Streets until it burned down in 1904. In 1865, Captured Confederate Captain William Tatham arrived in High Point with his regiment of cavalry and set up shop at the "Dolphin Hotel". When Union troops encountered Confederate cavalry near Branchville Road on September 12th they routed them without any loss to either side. This event is generally considered to be the beginning of hostilities between Union and Confederate forces in Gates County and led to many skirmishes over the next few years. In 1872 High Point became an unincorporated community when it merged with nearby Springdale into one municipality under name "Gates". By 1901 there were only 4 dwellings remaining within town limits; all but 2 had since been replaced by larger homes or apartment buildings. However, this did not mean that high-quality living wasn't possible anymore – instead all those new residents quickly acquired skills necessary for their new environment such as pottery making, welding, carpentry and showmanship etc., which helped keep things lively during these years characterized by economic stagnation and little change outside of occasional low voter turnout rates (averaging just Over 60% across most years). On November 5th 1902 cotton gin manufacturer James Fenton opened his doors for business in what would become known as "the Town Hall Building" – originally designed by noted local architect Walter Witherspoon – which has remained unchanged ever since as part of its importance within local history as well as its current use as a library/museum complex dating back to 1976! That same year saw another major milestone for HighPoint when it became home to both Northern Trust Bank & Trust Company (now Wells Fargo) – one of America's earliest bank subsidiaries with origins dating back to 1886! From here onward HIGH POINT experienced rapid growth until World War II put an abrupt halt to development………………….. Highpoint entered World War II completely unprepared due to a lack of funding so much so that many stores closed early due to lack of customers; however THANKFULLY thanks go out to our great military men & women who have supported us thruout this time (& will continue TO do so)! In fact we've even managed some pretty amazing things like having our flag flown over Marine Corps Base Quantico(on loan from Quantico Home Economics Dept.)…..high point during worldwar2!"
