High Point, North Carolina is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 25,452 at the 2010 census. High Point is the county seat and largest city of Gaston County. The town was founded in 1853 by General David Hunter and named for him. It was first called "Fayetteville" after Fayetteville, Tennessee, but it changed its name to High Point when it became part of Gaston County. The first post office in High Point was established on December 12, 1853. The present post office building was built in 1907 and functions as a public library. In 1875, the railroad arrived in Highpoint and began shipping goods from nearby Charlotte through the town's narrow street grid into Charlotteport which then exported these goods to other parts of the country. As rail transportation increased throughout North Carolina during this time period, so too did concentrations of industry near major cities like High Point which helped contribute to its growth over subsequent years. In 1925,HighPoint completed construction of what is now known as Greenway Parkway which connected downtown with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro across downtown Greensboro Boulevard (then defined as Cumberland Street). High Point, North Carolina is a town located in the U.S. state of North Carolina on the Yadkin River. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area and is the county seat of Durham County. The name comes from nearby Mount Abraham, which was once a peak in the region and still visible today from many miles away. In 1792, High Point became one of two towns to be incorporated within Durham County after being established by act of Congress as Wakefield Township (nowWinston-Salem). On December 12, 1835, High Point was selected as site for what would become known as UNC Chapel Hill; it had been recommended to President Andrew Johnson by General John Johnston during his term as governor of North Carolina. The first classes were held on October 1, 1854 at what is nowdie State Capitol Building on Broad Street in downtown High Point! Today's university campus covers over 6 square miles and has more than 150 buildings including research laboratories and teaching halls/residential complexes totaling nearly 200 acres (82 hectares)! The town's rich history can be seen in its numerous buildings and monuments such as:the Masonic Lodge No.1 building built in 1865 remains an excellent example of Queen Anne architecture;the Presbyterian Church built in 1886 stands high atop a hill overlooking downtown;and most importantlyUniversity Hall which houses both the administration offices for UNC Chapel Hill and various faculties - including law, medical science, philosophy etc.- providing ample space for students to meet, eat and work! Many businesses have also thrived throughout High Point's long history including: Wacoal Rubber Company founded by Burt Lancaster truck driver Harry Hargrave in 1907 which employed up to sixty people before selling out to Mack Trucks in 1959; Big Tobacco started production at Pritchard Paper Products plant located just east of downtown until it closed down in 1984 due to competition from electronic cigarettes; Bankers Trust Cooperative opened its doors back when this community had just a few hundred residents with branches scattered around central business district;Applebee's Hungry Horse restaurant began operations along South Main Street back when this shopping center consisted only of two small stores...Today there are over twenty restaurants clustered around University Square near Interstate 85! The area now known as High Point was founded by British colonists in 1735 and was named for Lord (Sir) John Highwood of Nottinghamshire. In 1742, the boundaries of what is now Columbus County were settled when General James Robertson's military expedition drove the Cherokee out of their traditional hunting domain to the east and west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This part of present-day North Carolina became part of Virginia after the American Revolution. In 1811, High Point College was founded in High Point by Presbyterian missionaries; it opened in 1815 and became one of the leading educational institutions in early America. It closed during Reconstruction because most white enrollment had shifted to other colleges or universities. It reopened as a college in 1919 and has since been one of the largest private schools in America with more than 60,000 students enrolled annually. In 1951–52, High Point became an affiliate college/university with UNC Chapel Hill; this affiliation remains today. In 1961–62, HighPoint merged with two adjacent towns – Sparta and Elizabethtown – to create a new municipality called "HighPoint". Elizabethtown’s incorporation into HighPoint made her become an official city within that municipality on July 1st 1962 .
