High Point is a city in Forsyth County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 153,836 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Forsyth County. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Forsyth County was organized on May 10, 1819 from portions of Durham and Wake counties. At first it included only parts of what are now Forsyth and Wake counties. On November 3, 1829, as part of a wave of mergers across North Carolina initiated by Governor Tryon during his administration, all but one of the original counties were divided into five new ones – High Point being one of them – with High Point as their capital. High Point's downtown was founded in 1881 when Judge James Hogg donated land to become a town square and named it after himself and others who had played important roles in its founding such as Methodist bishop John Latta and state legislator Amos Kendall. In 1914, High Point voters passed an ordinance authorizing the erection of a municipal building which would serve as the county courthouse until that structure could be built at an adjacent site. The first government offices were housed in this building from 1915 until 1949 when they moved to what is now the Health Sciences Complex on Pender Street near US Highway 421. In 1952 HighPoint voters passed an ordinance authorizing construction of a high school which would serve both local students and visitors coming through town for summer tourism activities; this school would become known as Appalachian State University (ASU). ASU's present Main Campus was dedicated in 1976 within walking distance (and sometimes less than)of HighPoint's downtown square where today’s city hall stands

High Point is a town in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,638 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. High Point is one of the oldest towns in North Carolina and has been around since 1736 when English settlers arrived on Catawba Island. The town was named for Colonel John Hill (1724-1800), a British officer who served under General James Wolfe during the Battle of Culloden in 1746. Colonel Hill's family had settled here in 1736, and he donated land to build a courthouse and other public buildings. In 1814, High Point became an independent city after it seceded from Randolph County and formed its own government. In 1868, High Point became the seat of Cabarrus County after it was created from parts of Randolph and Union counties. The following year saw high drama as civil war began within Cabarrus County over claims to jurisdiction over what was then known as "the Fayetteville ridges". On April 12, 1870, Confederate general Jubal A. Early attacked Union forces at Fort Fisher near Fayetteville and successfully drove them out; this action helped bring about Reconstruction in North Carolina. By 1900, High Point's population had reached 10,000 people; however, by 1910 it had decreased to 5,638 people due to natural attrition caused by high unemployment rates throughout the state during that decade combined with World War I efforts to move farmers inland for munitions production. However, high point did not forget its roots as an agricultural center with tobacco farming becoming increasingly less important during the 1920s as mechanization took hold across much of agriculture in America; nevertheless some local businesses continued operations until well into the 1970s including The Woolworth store which still stands today on Main Street opposite Interstate 95 exit 214A (HighPoint Boulevard). During World War II efforts were made to open up production areas inside Cabarrus County for military purposes but all attempts failed due largely to lack of available land or higher taxes than necessary for such endeavors; nonetheless local industry managed to continue functioning until well into the 1990s including paper manufacturing plants operated by Honeysuckle Paper Company and Durham Carpet Mills before both companies merged into Allied Bancorp in 1998 creating one largest carpet retailer operating nationally!
