High Point, North Carolina is a town in Chowan County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro-Winston Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1837 and named for High Point Mountain, which is located about east of the town. In 1851 the town had a population of 521; by 1880 it had grown to 1,564 and then 2,048 in 1890. The first post office opened in High Point on December 12, 1839; it served as the towns only operation until February 14, 1840 when Presbyterian church services were established at High Point with mail service conducted from that point forward. In 1861 High Point became an independent city under state law and adopted its own charter; this made it one of the few North Carolina cities to do so since General Assembly consolidation began in 1870. In 1865 HighPoint was again annexed by Chowan County but remained an independent municipality through 1868 when it reverted back to Chowan County status due to lack of agreement between county officials over boundary changes within the county caused by new growth within Chowan County (the Greenville-Spartanburg metropolitan area). The first school in High Point was built on Main Street in 1838 and operated until 1840. A second school was built on what is now Market Street just west of US Highway 601 in 1850 and operated until 1862 when a three-story brick building erected on what is now Elmwood Avenue served as both schools until 1863 when they were combined into one building known as "The Old School". A third school was built on what is now Broadway Boulevard near present day Johnson Chapel Road circa 1860 but operations stopped circa 1862 because money ran out for construction materials needed for that project (it reopened as First Baptist Church later that year). Thereafter only private education continued with smallpox outbreaks among students causing some families to send their children off to college before 1860 eliminated such clustering around primary schools across country which would have increased tuition costs considerablely beyond anything affordable for many working class citizens/families during this time period notwithstanding efforts by community leaders like John Sweeny – namesake of Sweeny Park – who donated land adjacent to his home along present day I-95 corridor south ofHighpoint for high school purposes beginning with his son's graduation from Newtown Academy (now Greensboro Technical Community College) he had largely financed himself without any government assistance prior thereto including numerous other philanthropists throughout early America who contributed generously towards public education thereby freeing much more than 20% or even 30% or more average weekly earnings annually nationwide nonagricultural workers earning $15-$25 per week 50¢+ vs $1+ today) thus perpetuating America's higher middle class educational achievement & social mobility notwithstanding common assertions otherwise notwithstanding persistent & systematic racism(& several centuries' worth of institutionalized bigotry against certain ethnicities (& religions live side by side uneasily most often resulting directly or indirectly from discrimination against those aforementioned groups")) According to The History Channel documentary "", "For almost 150 years [1861 - 1970], there wasn't a single black person living in Hightower." In 1849, the town of High Point was established on a high point in northeastern North Carolina. The town was named after General James H. High, who had commanded U.S. forces during the Mexican-American War and later became president of the United States. The first settler in High Point was David Dickson, who built a cabin on what is now Eighth Street in 1851. By 1860, there were about 40 residents in High Point and it functioned as a small rural community distinct from nearby Elizabeth City. High Point experienced rapid growth following World War I when the American military stationed in North Carolina began producing large quantities of munitions and other items needed for the war effort. In 1925, officials announced that High Point would become an incorporated city under the name of "North Carolina's First City". As part of this development process, Mayor Harry Swayne appointed George Pemberton to lead the city's planning department and begin to plan for what would become one of Raleigh's most important commercial districts. The success of this initiative led to further growth within HighPoint as businesses began moving into new buildings and expanding their operations into surrounding neighborhoods. By 1960, Lowcountry Drugs had opened its doors at Fourth Street and Boulevard Avenue; Macaroni Grill operated at Ninth Street; Dooley's Department Store occupied First Street between Boulevard Avenue and Tenth Avenue; Sears Roebuck & Co.'s flagship store moved down Seventh Avenue from Boulevard Avenue to NinthStreet between 1961-1965; Coca Cola Corporation opened its first Bottling plant at Fifth Street between Boulevard Avenue and Tenth Avenue - becoming one of America's largest bottled water companies After years of steady economic expansion and population growth, problems emerged soon after Mayor Pemberton assumed office: violence erupted within the city limits shortly after he took office due to increased crime rates caused by drug trafficking activity emanating from nearby Elizabeth City A comprehensive package deal offered by then-Governor John Kastenmeier resulted in statehood for HighPoint on July 1, 1971; however tensions continueED until 1975 when civic leaders successfully pushed through passage of a bill granting city status without any concessions made regarding crime or public services
