It is the county seat for Cabarrus County. The year 1835 saw an important event when Brigadier General Edmund Kirby Smith organized a militia to protect settlers from Native Americans who were terrorizing them and their livestock. In 1838, High Point became part of the State of North Carolina and had its own sheriff until 1959 when that office was merged into that of Cabarrus County Sheriff. In 1860, during the American Civil War, High Point sided with the Confederacy and lost much damage by Confederate forces while Union forces looted supplies from local businesses. The loss caused many businessmen in High Point to leave or closed their doors permanently due to lack of business opportunities after the war ended. 'the"Civil War: A History" written by Edwin Mosely tells about this time period in detail: "For over three decades following [the Civil War], most high-quality manufacturing jobs went overseas; Lowcountry entrepreneurs turned to agriculture instead." In 1865, entrepreneur Saundra Jarrell founded her first paper mill in High Point - one that still operates today - making it one of America's oldest continuously operating mills outside New England.. In 1924, across from where now stands First Baptist Church on South Tryon Street (now home to HPC), General Motors began production at what would become its largest plant east of Mexico City - located adjacent to then-owned Ryder Air Lines passenger Terminal on Elizabeth Avenue near US 401). This four-story building still stands today and is used as a museum dedicated toGM's history in Highpoint/Cabarrus County." GM's history here can be traced back further than even that; it started out as two small shops called Hecksler & Goudreau in 1880s before becoming GM Passenger Cars Company which built buses for Laudromar Line Railroad passengers between Charlotte and Wilmington." That same year also saw another significant event when Home Depot opened its first store west of Interstate 85 just north of I-85 exit 228A off NC 288 near Fuqua Lake Boulevard."
