In 1912, portions of Dare County were annexed into High Point Borough; those annexation proceedings continued until 1916 when all but southwestern Dare County was added to High Point Borough again (the easternmost corner still remains undeveloped). HighPoint has been hit hard by economic recession since 2007-2009 - although some businesses have been able to weather this storm relatively well, most seem unable or unwilling to reopen during these difficult times. High Point is a town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Durham County. The first permanent settler in High Point were two families from Georgia who relocated to what is now High Point in 1827. In 1838, Colonel Nathaniel Giles founded the town of High Point on a tract of land he owned east of today's downtown and south of what is now Chapel Hill. The original village burned down in 1852 but was rebuilt on higher ground near present day University Avenue and Elm Street. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant set up his headquarters here during the American Civil War and later returned to High Point for rest and relaxation before his final march through Central Carolina en route to Appomattox Court House.
In 1912, Alonzo Park opened his new amusement park called "The Park." When it closed in 1951, its only attraction was a small water slide that went into a pond below part of the old Bragg Barracks which had been used as an army training ground during World War I and World War II until it became part of Duke Energy's Research Triangle Park campus.
In 1984, High Point began construction on what would become one of America's most famous shopping malls-the Towne Center mall-and by 1990 it had become one of America's most thriving cities with over 140 businesses operating within its limits. By 2000 however there were just over 50 businesses remaining within town limits-a decrease attributed largely to suburban growth around the mall.
