The first European settlement in what is now Forsyth County was made by Englishman David Trigg on July 20, 1795. He named his land "HighPoint" after Mount Mitchell near which he had landed his vessel two days earlier. The first permanent settler in what would become High Point was John Thomas who arrived on February 4, 1800. On January 12th of that year, high school students from neighboring Lenoir County formed a "Tobacco Road Club" to promote slavery avoidance among themselves while they walked to market for their crops. In 1819-20 James Goudreau settled on land adjacent to present day High Point Cemetery (now part of University Park). Goudreau built an academy or “Goudreau Institute” which served as the village’s only school from 1824 until 1865 when it relocated to Raleigh and reopened under new name – Davidson Academy/Mountain View School (DAMVETS). When DAMVETS closed enrollment again due to lack of funds in 1877-78 there ensued lively debate over where all those headstones should be put since most people buried there were Creek Indian ancestors not white farmers like Trigg & Thomas! A group led by Reverend Brenton Waddell managed to gain write-in ballots for Superintendent Drury Mansion Chapel (now First Presbyterian Church) so that ALL graves could be transferred thenceforth!!
