The name "High Point" is derived from Mount Pisgah and it has been used by various inhabitants since before European settlement of the area in 1771. The first Europeans to come to High Point were white men who landed on Roanoke Island in 1599. These early settlers were led by Colleton family members John and Elizabeth Colleton. Other early settlers included John Armstrong and his brother Jameson who settled near present-day downtown High Point in 1614; George Catlett settled near what is now Orange Street in 1650; Thomas Peele settled on Hiwassee Creek in 1701; Samuel Blount settled on Hiwassee Creek in 1727; Ebenezer Caldwell established a mill on Hiwasise Creek in 1806; and Elijah White established a sawmill on Hiwasise Creek in 1810. In addition, several slaves were brought over from Africa for work on sugar plantations around this time. In 1819, High Point became part of Henderson County when that county was formed from parts of Cabarrus and Wake Counties. In 1830, High Point incorporated as a city under the name "New Town." New Town experienced rapid growth during the late 1800s due to its location close to railroad tracks and access to markets throughout eastern North Carolina. By 1900, high school students from New Town attended schools located about one mile (1 1/2 kilometers) away from downtown High Point through a system of transportation provided by horse-drawn coaches called "roundabouts." During World War II many citizens served within the military or are buried here including General Robert Eichelberger who commanded First U S Army forces during Operation Overlord which liberated Normandy France as part of Allied Forces Europe; Admiral Chester Nimitz Commander US Pacific Fleet during World War II's Battle Of Midway; Rear Admiral Arthur F Lattimore USNR Commander Task Force 58 which sank Japanese naval ships off Leyte Gulf Philippines November 1944 - December 1945
