The first known store in High Point was established on Commerce Street by J.M. Elliot in 1876. Two years later, he opened his second store on Elm Street. By 1886, there were six stores operating in High Point with a total of 138 business owners. In 1898, the Armour Manufacturing Company was founded in High Point by Major George Armstrong Lockwood and his brother-in-law Samuel Pritchard. Armour manufactured artillery rounds and other munitions subject to US military regulations at its original location on Exchange Street between Broadway and Market Streets. In 1907, Armour moved its operations to larger facilities located on Union Boulevard across from the University of Medical Sciences (UMS). At that time, UMS became one of America's preeminent medical schools andArmour manufactures rounds for both medical purposes as well as sporting use. In 1954, Winchester Repeating Arms Company merged with Remington Arms Company forming what is now Winchester Firearms Corporation (WFC). WFC continued to produce ammunition under various brand names until it dropped all such production in 1986 when it became part of Mayfield Armory Holdings Incorporated (MAH). That year saw Massad Ayoob become president of WFC after serving as CEO of parent company Remington Arms Corporation since 1984. High Point is a town in Randolph County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 10,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1834 by Scots-Irish immigrants as High Point Plantation. It became an incorporated city in 1902 and remains one of the most racially diverse cities in the United States. High Point is home to UNC Charlotte and Duke University. The river that runs through the town forms its namesake point: "High Point" refers to its elevation above sea level, while "Plantation" refers to its early history as a Scots-Irish settlement within what is now Randolph County. The first settlers arrived in 1834 on a small boat called the " Hope ". Trinity College (now UNC Charlotte) was founded nearby in 1835, and helped start High Point's growth as a college town; during this time, many of the prominent Scots-Irish families settled there including McCrary, MacKeithan, McNichols and Rankin. In 1868–69 Presbyterian missionaries from Scotland landed at Hightown Cove on Catawba Lake and began evangelizing among Native Americans and teaching them Christianity; by 1870 nearly all of southern Randolph County had become Protestant due to missionary efforts. In 1902 High Point became an incorporated city with representation from both African American (the first black person elected as mayor) and white ethnic groups when it joined the larger Charlotte metropolitan area; it remains one of America's most racially diverse cities today with over 50% African American residents living within its borders alone! In recent years much progress has been made towards repairing infrastructure which has suffered due to decades of neglect including two major floods that struck HighPoint during Hurricane Floyd in 2016 – thankfully these events did not cause any permanent damage however they taught people about just how important it is for communities like HighPoint to have strong water systems so that they can cope with future disasters!
