It was named for John Hickory, a member of Parliament from North Carolina who died in 1761 while trying to found a new colony there. Some believe that the name originated with Chief Powhatan's hickories - these trees bore red and yellow fruit that were used by early colonists for fuel and clothing. In 1868, Richard Kenedy built a dam across the Catawba River in what is now downtown Hickory and began using power from the water to irrigate his cotton plantation. This led to Hickory becoming one of the most important towns in western North Carolina; it had a population of over 1,000 by 1870. Growth continued until World War II when almost all industry left town because of wartime shortages of natural resources such as oil and coal. Today, much growth has occurred within the boundaries of this historic town due to its location within Interstate 85 corridor close to major shopping malls and airports

In 1865, General Nathan Bedford Forrest founded Fort Donelson on the Chattahoochee River near present-day Chattanooga, Tennessee to block railroads from reaching Mobile Bay. When Confederate soldiers abandoned Fort Donelson after Union forces drove them out, they burned all of its supplies and evacuated without taking any prisoners. This event is commonly cited as one of the turning points during the Civil War that led to Confederate victory over Union forces at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. The city's economy has been based largely on agriculture for most of its history; however, development has moved away from agriculture towards manufacturing since World War II began. In recent decades, Hickory has become an important center for health care services due to its location within close proximity to several hospitals and other medical facilities as well as its large number of businesses that provide health care services such as doctors' offices and hospitals.
Hickory was a small town located in Randolph County, North Carolina, until the early 20th century. Hickory was founded in 1792 by Captain John Hickory and his wife Sally. The first house in Hickory was built on the present site of Bank of America Stadium. The original post office was established in 1817. In 1839, Hickory became a county seat and remained so until 1907.
