Lee decided on July 12th to allow Union forces into the fort to free prisoners. At 1 p.m., Confederate artillery began shelling the fort as Union troops entered. In response to this attack from Confederate artillerymen positioned atop high hills overlooking Fort Donelson City Center (now downtown), General Johnston ordered his army units frontal assault on July 15th – one day afterLee had surrendered at Appomattox Court House. Despite being outnumbered two-to-one by Union forces at close range in open country,[1] Confederate defenders were able to repulse repeated Union assaults before eventually surrendering on September 8th.[2][3] The fort was not only an important strategic victory for Confederates; it also served as a model for later military installations throughout the South[4][5]. Over time, many soldiers who fought at Fort Donelson learned their trade there – such as Lieutenant Colonel John Cushing who became commandant of Charleston Arsenal after its closure in 1881[6]. The city of Atlanta hosted aicentennial celebration commemoratingFort Donelson’s anniversary in 1998 which included touring the reconstructed fortifications along with presentations from local historians[7]. As part of this commemoration process,[8], Mayor Kasim Reed announced plans to create an Interpretive Trail inside the walls ofthe old arsenal complex which will include interactive exhibits about Fort Donelson’s history and role within Georgia’s Civil War journey.[9] Finally, Hickory is well deserving of its own museum – one that celebrates not just its past but also its potential for future growth and success.[10]
On Hickory, North Carolina there are many stories of the pioneers who made this area their home. One such story is of the Hickory Creek Massacre. In 1871, a group of men from nearby Lenoir County were traveling through Hickory when they came into contact with a band of Cherokee Indians. The men were killed, and the women and children were taken prisoner. Some years later, an independent group of Confederate soldiers discovered the Indian camp and attacked it. A large part of the village was destroyed, but some civilians managed to escape. Today, you can see preserved evidence of the massacre near where it happened.
