Hickory is a town in Wilson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Hickory has been home to a large number of farmers and their families for centuries. The first white settlers in Hickory were Hugh McCulloch and his family who arrived in 1798. The town was founded by John Hicks in 1819. It became an incorporated municipality in 1898. The city of Hickory was established in 1951 as a result of the merger of two towns: Hickory (founded 1819) and Greenville (founded 1899). In 2000, the City Council voted to annex parts of neighboring Gastonia to form a new city called Gastonia-Lenoir because its population had surpassed that of Hickory. However, this annexation did not take place because Lenoir's population exceeded that of Gastonia-Charlotte by more than 10%. In 2006, the Town Council approved plans for the construction of an expressway through downtown which would have run parallel to I-95 within one mile of all residential areas. This project was never completed due to financial problems which led to the closure of several businesses including Video FX on Elm Street and Lumberyards on Buchanan Avenue during 2006–2007 season; both businesses reopened following bankruptcy proceedings later that year."The News & Observer", 5/1/2006 On July 16, 2009, it was announced that local developer David Humphrey had agreed to sell most or all of his land comprising about 4 square miles (10 km²) along I-95 between Charlotte and Raleigh for $2 million. On October 2nd 2009 it was announced that developers Justin Sprouse and Jeffrey Hargrave had withdrawn their offer for the remaining land at $3 million after finding out there were too many environmental concerns with respect to the proposed highway route. On November 12th 2009 it was announced that former Mayor Tom Smith had accepted an offer from Jefferies Southeast Properties LLC for him and other memberships on what would become known as "The Smith Family Development Center". Plans call for development over 3 square miles (10 km²) centered around downtown with access highways leading into it such as I-85/I-277 looping through it and I-40 running concurrent nears its southern edge. After months long discussions between various parties involved with Highway 95 Extension - SPD&E Planner Deanne Mayfield said "the final decision has yet be made" about whether or not they will pursue building something like this given how much opposition there seems likely will be from residents living adjacent thereto

Hickory, North Carolina is a small town located in Rutherford County, North Carolina. The population of Hickory was 929 as of the 2010 census. Hickory is home to the Hickory Log Cabin Museum and State Park. The first Europeans to visit what is now Hickory were French traders who landed in 1665. In 1731, Englishman Capt John Smith explored the area and named it "Hickory" for the hickories that he saw growing along the riverbank. In 1814, Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest camped at present-day Chickamauga Lake while his army invaded Georgia. When General James Bostic's Union forces reached Chickamauga Lake after a day's march, they discovered that Forrest's men had burned all of their encampments and stores, leaving them without food or ammunition. Bostic ordered his army to pursue Forrest but were repulsed by Confederate artillery fire as they crossed Chickamauga Creek over which the battle took place. In 1864, Union general Ulysses S Grant advanced against Sherman's Confederates near Chattanooga during the Atlanta Campaign and fought a major engagement at Peachtree Hills known as "The Battle of Resaca". After this decisive victory over Confederate forces at Kennesaw Mountain, Grant ordered his corps commander General George Meade to move upriver towards Savannah so that Meade could cross into Georgia with reinforcements before Hood's Army could reach him from northward.On 15 September 1864 General Meade notified Robert Ewell about Hood's Army being south of Atlanta:Ewell believed that Hood was retreating northeastward instead of moving northwestward towards Savannah; accordingly on 21 September1864 Ewell moved forward two divisions (the Third Corps) under Generals Winfield Scott Hancock and Benjamin Butler toward Goldsboro where they would join up with General Johnston’s forces; these troops reached Goldsboro on 3 October 1864 Aftermath of The Battle of Resaca: Union Casualties Averaged 5% per Hour compared To Over 50% Per Hour Given To Confederate Forces By Enemy shots A total of 1st Brigade – commanded by BrigadierGeneral Alexander McNair – lost its entire command including most officers & enlisted men when its brigade Headquarters became engaged in front line action near Resaca House before withdrawing back behind friendly lines; Second Brigade also lost some numbers killed & wounded
