Hickory has a humid subtropical climate (Cfa), with warm and humid summers and cold but often dry winters. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Hickory were Uncas Indians who came from Mexico in 1539 and built their own village on the banks of the Holston River some 10 miles (16 km) east of present-day Hickory. A white man by the name of Giles founded a small settlement on the site of present-day Winthrop in 1718. The first European settler in what became Hickory was James Robertson, who arrived there in 1724 as an indentured servant of Nicholas Carruth, one of George Washington's early backers. At that time, Rutherford County consisted only of two settlements: Chapel Hill to the north and Winthrop to the south. By 1727, when provisions had been stockpiled for General James Fayette's army encamped at Morganton during Revolutionary War season, about 80 percent of all residents within Rutherford County lived within five miles (8 km) or less of where goods could be procured without leaving home; hogs and cattle provided most rural subsistence. In January 1728, four months after skirmishing near Princeton on December 12th among forces under Nathanael Greene and William Howe against royalist forces under Lord Dunmore at Saratoga Creek Bridge over Catawba River outside modern day Winston-Salem,[1] Hutchinsville was renamed Hickory because "a group or hickories" had gathered around a tree there to shelter from a snowstorm during wintering by American Forces encamped nearby at Wintergreen Farms that year.[2][3] In 1821 John Witherspoon erected a sawmill on White Clay Creek which began operations producing lumber for local use soon after its construction. In 1865, Union soldiers burned down Fort McAllister to prevent Quaker missionaries from building another fort nearby; this destroyed most of the original settlement but not Fort McAllister which still stands today as a restoration project by Friends of Historic Hickory Park Incorporated (FHIP). The townspeople rebuilt quickly using local materials and labor – within six years all but one street had been paved or repaired – setting an example for later towns across Duplin County. With rapid growth came social change: due largely to agricultural production, many people left home for work during the late 1800s and1900s outside of town; some neighborhoods were even abandoned until recent times because there was no market for their homes anymore During World War II, Hickory produced more than 3 million pounds (1 million Kg) of munitions used by both U.S./British troops and civilians around North Carolina troop concentrations throughout much of Europe including Normandy and Germany; many families made lifelong memories living through those wartime years in these large cities close to military installations such as Walter Reed Army Medical Center Camp Prince William near Raleigh/Durham Airport where they could work directly on land leased from military manufacturers After World War II ended, many businesses closed or moved away while other industries increased such as health care services due to demographic changes resulting from Baby Boomer migration into larger metropolitan areas throughout most Northeastern states along with Interstate 95 linking major cities making travel relatively easy within reach while smaller towns developed around factories or military bases where jobs kept available even if out-of-town residents moved away By 2000 over 60% of HH's population lived inside its limits making it one of fastest growing small towns in America Amongst "Large" US Towns Growth Rates Fell Below 50%.
