In 1814, Colonel James McNeill built his home in Hickory and had a large gunsmithing room constructed within it. Col. McNeill used this room to make target pistols and shotguns. In 1865, the Confederate States of America (CSA) lost the Battle of Gettysburg and all their guns were surrendered. Many of these guns were melted down and used to build cannons for the CSA army. townspeople started making new target pistols from some of these cannons and exported them to other parts of the Confederacy. Hickory has also been known as a center for ammunition production for many years. In 1881, Samuel Colt began manufacturing handguns in Hickory using small-caliber powder charges instead of lead balls. This move led to Hickory becoming one of the most important firearms manufacturing towns in North Carolina. From here, Colt continued producing handguns until 1934 when he moved his factory overseas due to World War II restrictions on American exports
