Hickory, North Carolina is a small town located in the Unincorporated County of Western Alamance County, North Carolina. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. Hickory is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem–High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first recorded mention of Hickory was by Captain John Bogue in 1775 when he noted that there were "hickories on the river" and later by General James Grant in 1814 when he described it as "a flourishing village" with a store and two or three houses. In 1825, Colonel David Sayers reported that Hickory had "a large cotton plantation", which may have been what led to its growth as a cotton center during the antebellum period. In 1830, Reverend Wiley Hogg founded the Methodist Episcopal Church in Hickory and soon began preaching here. A school was built here in 1836 and became known as Hogg's Academy; it still operates today as an elementary school. In 1840, Captain John Foard established a post office at Hickory for mail delivery between Greensboro and Winston-Salem; this office remains operational today. In 1898, Hickory was hit hard by Hurricane Floyd which caused extensive damage to both its homes and businesses; however, within a few years most of the damage had been repaired or replaced. In 1954, Hurricane Betsy destroyed much of downtown including much of the original church building but Christianity continued to thrive thanks to Reverend Wiley Hogg’s missionary work among displaced people from other areas who rebuilt their lives around Christianity. A new library opened in 1955 named after Driscoll Hodges (1901-1983) who donated $100K towards its construction which also includes many functions such as public hearings on legislation affecting libraries throughout North Carolina Hickory has enjoyed some recent successes through economic development such as being selected to become home to The University at Charlotte (UNC) – one of America’s largest research universities – in 2006 and also hosting several events each year such as Taste Of HickORY Festival featuring local restaurants along with UNC students giving presentations on various topics related to food culture vernacular architecture from earlyhistoric times through present day
