Hickory is a town in Sampson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,914 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sampson County. The first guns were made by farmers in Hickory and other small towns around this area for hunting game such as deer, bear and rabbit. The town has a population of about 1,500 residents and it is located on the Yadkin River. Hickory was once an important milltown because of its production of paper products such as checks and money orders. Today, however, most of the town's businesses are related to agriculture or tourism. In 1916, Hickory became one of sixteen towns in North Carolina to adopt a resolution declaring themselves "an open white community." This designation allowed African American citizens living in northcentral NC to purchase property and live without fear of discrimination from their white counterparts. In 1966, HickORYbecamethe first black municipality in North Carolina when it merged with nearby Mexican Hillborough into one municipality known as Rocky Mount (population: 25,000).

Hickory is a town in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,391 at the 2010 census. It has been part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg-Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area since 2009. Hickory is located on the Blue Ridge Parkway about 26 miles (41 km) east of Charlotte. The first settler in what would become Hickory was James Moseley who arrived in 1778 from Virginia. He built a log cabin on an knob overlooking the New River and named it "Moses." In 1827, John Cockerill purchased land adjacent to Moses and founded Hickory Mills which became one of America's leading cotton mills. In 1848, Samuel Sibley erected a large frame building for school purposes which served as the town hall until 1861 when a new courthouse was built on Park Avenue. On December 12, 1865, Union General Jubal Early fought his last battle at Camden Station outside of Hickory Mills before being fatally wounded hours later near this same location by Confederate General Robert Ewell. After thewar, Hickory began to experience rapid growth as many farmers moved into the area to raise hogs and corn while local merchants started trading goods with eastern markets The post office opened in 1870 and by 1897 had grown to over 100 residents In 1905, builders started work on what would become known as "The Woodchuck" Resort which would be one of North Carolina's most popular tourist destinations for over 100 years As its popularity grew so did business at the resortsSport fishing spas lansky golf courses multiplex movie theaters bowling alleys
The Hickory people first populated the area now known as North Carolina in the late 8th century. The early settlers were farmers and hunters who hunted game such as deer, hogs, and bears. By the late 18th century, heavy demand for lumber and other resources had led to a rapid population growth in the area. In 1775, General Thomas Polk announced his attack on Yorktown during the American Revolution, which resulted in a large influx of refugees from England. This helped to spur development around Raleigh and other nearby towns. The addition of railroads in the mid-19th century allowed goods to be transported quickly from points east or west, leading to an increase in economic development.
