Raleigh became an important military outpost during the American Revolution due to its strategic location at Surry Hills Road between Johnston’s Mill Road to the south and New Bern Road to the north – making it easy for British troops to move through central North Carolina without having to worry about being Shelled by French forces operating from Fort Duquesne on Cape Fear River downstream (). In 1798 Governor Tryon ordered Colonel John Broughton – commander of British forces occupying South Carolina – order his men not fire upon any white Americans they encountered until he had relieved them from their duty; this incident is sometimes referred to as "The Indian Massacre." Aftermath: Over 150 people were killed including women and children when Lt.-Colonel John Broughton’s unit opened fire while driving off some Cherokee Indians who had invaded his plantation; over 100 others were wounded or taken prisoner by Broughton’s men

One event that helped spur growth within Hickory was the erection of a sawmill on village Creek by local farmer John Phillips in 1811. This mill quickly became one of the leading enterprises within Hickory and soon began producing lumber which was sold throughout north central North Carolina Another significant event that helped drive development within Hickory occurred when James Hogg purchased land east of what is now downtown Hickory from Abram Stevens for $2,500 in 1821 This purchase marked the beginning of what would become known as Hoggtown because this land lay near where later generations would build their homes . By 1830, there were already over 60 buildings erected around Hoggtown including several stores and schools . Over time, other businesses located within or adjacent to Hoggtown such as saddlersy , liveryivery stable , doctor’s office , etc., helped contribute to its strong commercial foundation In addition to its successful economy, another important factor which contributed to HickORY’s growth during these years was its location – not too far from major transportation hubs including Raleigh and Durham respectively . This connectivity allowed businesses located within or adjacent to Hicksville (now Burlington) both goods and passengers access to these markets without having to leave their villages
