Hickory has been inhabited by the Cherokee since before European settlement began. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army invaded North Carolina and destroyed much of the town in what is now known as the Hickory Massacre. The town was rebuilt and reached its present size in 1875 when it became a component of Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area. The first white settler in Hickory was John Wilkinson who arrived there with his family in 1786. At that time, Hickory consisted of only a few houses and trees on a swampy lot near what is now downtown Hickory. Wilkinson named his new community after General James Longstreet, who had helped him defeat British forces at Battle of Kings Mountain two years earlier. By 1800, however, most of western North Carolina had been taken over by Cherokee Indians and squatters from Georgia had begun to arrive in large numbers in eastern North Carolina as part of an effort to expand cotton plantations into areas that were still available for agriculture. In 1802–3 Andrew Jackson led an expedition against Indian Territory under the command of MajorGeneral Andrew Johnson which resulted in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend where he capturedchiefs Wacoand Currituck Island off Florida during this campaign that demonstrated Ulysses S Grant's strategic importance within the Union army during this period By 1825, however, many southern Cherokees had left their homes eastward to find new opportunities because they could not support their extended families living year-round on buffalo or deer hunting grounds inside their own territory A group including local landowning interests organized themselves into a provisional government calledthe Provisional Government ofNorth Carolina on February 20th 1825 to resist Removal proceedings initiated by Governor David Moore On May 1st Garrison proposed to council that changes be made to Constitution providing for election without write-in ballots (later law #5) A committee composed primarilyof local landowners met on June 14th and recommended adoption but opposition came from some members including Captain Nathaniel Cary who argued that elections should be held using legal vote insteadof mere majority rule A second meeting ensued July 5th with no result After four days more deliberation March 4th Garrison introduced Resolution proposing Council adopt amendment prohibiting removal proceedings until future ratification The motion carried unanimously with only one dissenting voice From then until December 25th all correspondence between Provisional Government & GovernorMoore took place through mail It should be noted herethat despite overwhelming evidence demonstrating removal proceedings were promptedby these proposals rather than anything remotely resembling concerns about Indian Affairs Johnston refused even to recognize this provisional government Although his rejection may have been motivated more by political considerations than anything else he did retain control over state government affairs until late December when he finally ceded authority back to Moore

Hickory was founded in 1795 by James Hickory. The town is located on the eastern edge of the NC Blue Ridge Mountains and is near the mouths of the Yadkin and Catawba Rivers. Hickory became a major cotton plantation center during the 1800s, and it is still a major producer of natural gas.
