Hickory, North Carolina is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina and the county seat of McDowell County. The population was 43,569 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Cumberland River in centralNorth Carolina and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 2,000 years. In 1736, General James Moores established Fort Hickory in present-day Hickory to protect his military supplies from Cherokee Indians. After France lost its Revolutionary War against Britain, French traders began traveling through North Carolina and founded two other trading posts at this site: Beaufort and Fayetteville. By 1800, several small settlements had been formed around Hickory Creek within McDowell County: Gastonville (now Greenville), Randolphtown (now Danbury), Mount Airy (now Radford), Pittsboro (now Morganton), Westfall (now Asheboro). In 1825, John Capps became proprietor of a mill on the river near present day Hickory proper. About 1835–1840 he erected a large frame building which served as the first courthouse in what is now McDowell County. A second courthouse was built about 1840 by Jno.[Capps] Peebles who also enlarged and improved it; it is still standing today on Pryor Street in downtown Hickory. On July 2nd, 1830 John Hargrave arrived with his seven hundred men to establish Fort Nixonsborough downstream from Fort Gibson on Lake Pontchartrain opposite Mobile Bayou Indian Territory then part of Spanish Texas The town of Hickory was laid out along Pryor Street between High Street and Market Square after Hargrave's attack caused terrible damage to much of downtown as well as widespread panic among local farmers when they saw all the cannons pulled down from atop Fort Gibson which were being used against them instead of their own militia forces loyal to England!

After Lenoir's death in 1847, his widow sold the post to local farmer David Sinton who renamed it Hickory after her husband's native state of Kentucky. In 1881, Sinton donated land for a public school which became known as Sinton School District No. 1 after him. In 1926, Hickory elected its first Mayor, Wm Hargrave Claypool who served until his retirement in 1971. Prior to 1959 when Haywood County was divided into two districts, residents of Hickory voted on all issues within their own district rather than going through county commissioners which then allowed more outsiders access to their community affairs In 1958, when Haywood County was reorganized into two districts, HickORY lost its status as a city and instead became an unincorporated community within district 2 with its own mayor and council members In 1971, Wm Hargrave Claypool retired from office after serving 27 years as Mayor of HickORY The current Mayor is Jeff Neal

Since 1960, Hickory has been home to Hargrave University which offers undergraduate degrees as well as graduate degrees such as law, health care administration, business administration, engineering/technology management etc., making it one of the most comprehensive university campuses within reach of many people across North Carolina. The city has taken on many initiatives over time to promote its culture including hosting world renowned music festivals year round; creating supported housing programs that provide affordable living arrangements for low-income residents; providing education opportunities through arts programming; sponsoring professional sports events such as baseball games or basketball tournaments;Hosting international conferences such as Americas Forum or European Union Summit every two years
